You are DeLand campaign to get input from citizens on city's future

(DeLand, FL) – More special events, better development and more housing options.

These are just a few of the comments city staffers expect to receive from the public in regards to what they want for the city’s future.

In May, the city unofficially launched the You Are DeLand campaign, seeking input from the community for what they want for DeLand by the year 2050. The comments gathered from this campaign will then be integrated into the city’s 2050 Vision Plan, which was adopted by the city 10 years ago.

“There is no doubt that DeLand is a great place to live, work and play,” said Mayor Robert F. Apgar. “But the key is to create an even better and sustainable future for our children and grandchildren as well as others who will choose DeLand as their home too.”

But instead of only inviting residents to meetings, the city will be going to the public to ask for input.

In partnership with the West Volusia Beacon Publisher and Conrad Realty’s Barb Shepherd and Bill Budzinski, owner of The Elusive Grape, the city has placed a chalkboard in Artisan Alley and soon one will be installed on the south wall of The Elusive Grape where residents will be able to leave their thoughts for what they think the future of DeLand should look like.

Artist-in-Residence Erica Group designed a logo that will be placed alongside the chalkboards with the hashtag #YouAreDeLand – which will encourage people to post selfies and their thoughts on social media.

Staff members will be on hand at several upcoming city events where people will be able to fill out surveys and write on our mobile chalkboard. The city is also offering two surveys online, and those who complete the surveys are eligible to win some free swag.

Comments will be gathered through September 30 and then staff and the City Commission will use those comments as a guide in amending the 2050 Vision Plan.

The surveys and more information on the program may be foundat the city’s website: www.deland.org/resources/youaredeland
