City offices

City offices will be closed beginning at noon Wednesday through Thursday due to Tropical Storm Nicole.

Mayor Robert F. Apgar signed an emergency declaration Tuesday morning and urged all residents to prepare for conditions to deteriorate beginning Wednesday evening and last through the day on Thursday.

The peak of the storm is expected to bring inland Volusia areas 45-60 mph winds, with gusts of up to 75 mph, and between 4 to 6 inches of rain, according to latest projections from the National Weather Service office in Melbourne.

“People need to take this storm very seriously,” Apgar said. “You need to finish your preparations as quickly as possible and be ready to ride out this storm.”

The city's Citizen Information Center is operational. For questions pertaining to Hurricane Nicole or to report downed wires or trees, call the CIC at 386-626-7000.

The Volusia County Citizens Information Center (CIC) is also fully activated. Residents may call 866-345-0345.

Power Outages

We do anticipate power outages with this storm, though hopefully not widespread. Duke Energy is staged and ready to respond once conditions allow.

We were informed by GFL that trash was NOT picked up on Wednesday due to the Volusia County transfer station closing earlier than anticipated. Wednesday and Thursday customers will be serviced beginning on Friday as conditions allow.

Debris

There was not a lot of vegetative debris caused by the storm, so the city will not be hiring a contractor. Instead, city crews will pick up any large debris created by the storm. All large vegetative debris like tree limbs should be placed at the curb and not bagged. All smaller debris like leaves should be bagged in clear bags for GFL to pick up as normal yard waste.
