Mission:
To provide Animal Control Services to the public
in the most effective, and courteous means possible. We will
provide professional, pro-active enforcement of the City of
DeLand Animal Control Ordinances and the State Statutes pertaining
to animals. We will provide responsible pet ownership by individual
contact.
What
Animal Control Services provides:
City of DeLand Animal Services is responsible for picking
up stray dogs and cats, investigating animal bites, abandonment,
animal cruelty cases and excessive barking complaints in the
incorporated limits of the City of Deland.
Our
goal is to keep all owned animals confined
to their property and to ensure animals
are vaccinated and licensed.
Our
objectives are:
- To minimize
the risk of rabies outbreaks and threats to the public health
and safety by vaccinating the majority of dogs and cats against
the disease.
- To reduce
the number of dogs and cats euthanized at the Humane Society
- To provide
a pro-active response to dangerous dogs to reduce the number of
bites.
- To provide
the public with a timely response to complaints and adequate follow-up
to ensure complaint resolution.
- To promote
responsible pet ownership
The City of
Deland has one full-time animal control officer, Emilio Vega, who
has 20 years experience in the Animal Control Field. Animal Control
Officers must complete a 40-hour certification course before becoming
an Animal Control Officer. They must complete a minimum of four
hours of refresher training per year to remain certified.
Deland Animal
Control Services extracts approximately 1,000 animals each year
from the city and transports them to the Halifax Humane Society.
Countywide, approximately 15,000 dogs and cats are destroyed each
year due to a lack of homes.

How do I get a Rabies Tag?
A. Rabies Tags are sold by most veterinarian offices.
Please see listing for veterinarians in the yellow pages of your
telephone book. License tags are sold through the City of DeLand's
cashier's office upon presentation of your rabies tag.

My pet is lost. What do I do?
A. Animal Control will take a lost pet report so that
they are aware of your lost animal. You also should call the Halifax
Humane Society at (386) 274-4703 ext. 0; the West
Volusia Humane Society at (386) 734-2450 or the Southeast Humane
Society in New Smyrna Beach at (386)428-9860.

Who do I call to pick up a dead animal on the side of the road in
the City of DeLand?
A. To pick up dead animals in the City of Deland, please
call Animal Control at (386) 740-6900 and they will contact the
animal removal services. Animal Control hours are Monday thru Friday,
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except holidays. After hours, please call
the DeLand Police Department at (386) 734-1711

Is there a leash law for dogs?
A. There is a control law for dogs, meaning the animal
must be under physical restraint or verbal command when outside
on private or public property.

My neighbor's dog barks all the time. What can I do?
A. Animal Control will investigate your complaint. However,
we must have your name and the address of the barking dog before
Animal Control can respond.
