Hurricane Preparedness

June 1st Begins Florida's Hurricane Season

Be prepared. The Boy Scout motto is the best advice public safety officials have to offer when it comes to this year's hurricane season.

Being prepared means safeguarding your home, your family, your pets and yourself. To make sure you are ready, public safety officials recommend residents stockpile at least a three-day supply of bottled water, nonperishable food and medicine. Have a plan for your family and your pets. Take time now to put together a survival kit and an evacuation plan.

The typical warning time for storms is about 96 hours. But

there are cases in which a storm will form and give as little as 24 hours to prepare. That's not much time to figure out an evacuation plan, determine how much money you have in case you have to stay in a hotel and make sure your pets are in a safe place should you have to leave them behind.

Forecasters predict this year's hurricane season - from June 1 to November 30 - will churn up 13 to 17 named storms, seven to 10 hurricanes, and three to five major hurricanes.
