To
vote in the City of DeLand election, you must live inside the
city limits, and must be a registered voter.
WHO
CAN RUN:
To run for a seat on the DeLand City Commission, you must be a
registered voter, and you must have lived inside city limits for
at least six months before qualifying to run. Candidates also
must subscribe to the
Candidate's
Oath and a Loyalty Oath, promising to uphold the laws of the City
and state. Candidates are also required to pay a $48 qualifying
fee, and file all the required papers during the qualifying
period.
By
law, candidates for seats on the City Commission may not accept
campaign contributions before filing paperwork with the DeLand
City Clerk.
The
qualifying period is the period set aside for candidates to file papers declaring their intention to seek a seat on the City
Commission, and documenting their qualifications for the office.
Candidates
may open campaign accounts and collect contributions before the
qualifying period, but they must first file paperwork with the
City Clerk.
WHO
CAN VOTE:
Any registered voter who lives inside DeLand City limits can vote.
If you are not registered to vote, applications can be obtained
from the Department of Elections, local financial institutions,
public libraries, driver-license bureaus, Chambers of Commerce,
and other locations. Applications can also be printed from the
Internet in English or Spanish. The Volusia County Elections Office Web site is at www.volusia.org/elections.
Although
elections for seats on the DeLand City Commission are overseen
by the City Clerk, voter registration is overseen by the Volusia
County Supervisor of Elections.
Approximately
one month before any election, the Elections Supervisor closes
the books. All voters who want to participate in the election
must be registered before the books close.
Applications
can be returned by mail, and must be postmarked 29 days before
the date of the election in order to vote in that election.
They
may also be hand-delivered to the Volusia County Elections Office
or to a public library at least 29 days before the date of the
election.
ABSENTEE
BALLOTS:
Voters who are unable to visit the polls on Election Day may request
absentee ballots from the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections
by calling (386) 736-5930 or may vote in person at the Supervisor's
Office.
