About the Center

The Activities Center was constructed in 1969 under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Department, headed by Thomas W. Sperling. It was formally dedicated on December 12, 1969. It is a municipal recreational center used primarily by the senior citizens of the community. The main community room was renovated in 1996. In the fall of 1999 it was renamed the Wayne G. Sanborn Activities Center.

It seats approximately 200 people when used for a banquet. Saturdays are available for weddings or meetings. The activities Center has handicap accessible restrooms and a built-in stage.

Monday Dance
Each Monday afternoon, the Activities Center hosts a Big Band dance. “The Deltonans”, a 14-piece live band, plays a variety of tunes from the 40’s including waltzes, rumbas, fox trots, and others. The dance is from 2:30-4:30pm and refreshments are served. There is a $4.00 admission fee for non residents and $3.00 for residents who live in the incorporated area of DeLand. Come and dance or just listen to the wonderful sounds of live music.

Honeybees Square Dance
Monday nights are devoted to square dancing. New classes form in October of each year from 7:00 to 8:00 PM and cost $4.00 each class. Club dance is from 8:00-10:00 PM (Members $4.00 and non-members $4.50). Swing Your Partner! Call Larry Hines (386)738-2122 for further information.

Annual Art Festival
Is on Sat. and Sun., March 25th & 26th 2006, at Earl Brown Park. Great food, great art and lots os relaxing fun.

Wednesdays are currently devoted to a variety of exciting and challenging card and board games which include the Chicago style Charlie Baker Bridge Club (12:00am-4:00pm) and the Bunco Bullies Bunco group (12:00-4:00 pm). Scrabble also meets from 12:00-4:00pm. New players are always welcome.

The AARP meets the third Friday of each month. These meetings of the local chapter of the AARP are informational and refreshments are served.

The Community & Tourist Club
This adventurous group meets from October through March, every Tuesday of the month, from 7:00pm-9:00pm for their monthly meeting and film. Numerous trips are planned to dinner theaters, theme parks and amazing places around Central Florida. Schedules are available at the Senior Activities Center. See Florida and leave the driving to us!

DeLand Lawn Bowling & Shuffleboard Club
This extremely active group plays at our first class facility and hosts numerous tournaments throughout the year. They also sport a variety of club activities for their members including pinochle & canasta..
New members are always welcome and lessons are available for those interested. Open play is on Monday, Tuesday & Friday from 1:30-3:30pm. Call Ann at 386-748-5860.

New England, Vermont, North American Social Clubs
These northern folks meet on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays from October through April and include Pot Luck lunch. Come and join the fun and reminisce about shoveling snow.

Thursday Dance Club
Starts in September. Meets each Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Learn the latest dance steps and meet new friends.

West Volusia Artists meet on Fridays from 9:00am to 12:00pm. This local group of artisans meet to paint, draw and socialize. This is an open club and no fees are required. Bring your brushes!

West Volusia Chorus meets the each Tuesday at 2:00pm. September thru April. For those of you who can carry a tune this club is for you! Fa-La-La-La-La!

New! Walking/Jogging Club
Ready to burn off some of those holiday pounds? Beginning Friday, Jan. 5th enjoy Earl Brown Park and walk or jog with a safe, social group around this one mile trail. Meet at the Activities Center on Monday, Wednesday & Friday at 10:00am. Rewards will be given for mile increments achieved. Registration is required. Call 386-740-6860 for more information. Beginning Watercolor for Seniors
This new class is for the beginner and intermediate student and will be taught by a DBCC certified watercolor instructor, Shirley Compeau. Classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 12:00-2:00pm. The cost is $32.00 per month of instruction and will begin on Oct. 5th. Supply lists will be available when you register for the class as they are not included in the fee. LIMITED REGISTRATIONS!

Dance Lessons

Thursday afternoons from 2:30-5:00pm you can learn to cha-cha or polka or any one of numerous dances. This is an intermediate level ballroom dance class. Lessons are from 2:30-3:30pm and then you can practice during the next hour and half during the dance. Refreshments are included and the cost is only $3.00. Grab a friend and learn to rumba!

Basic Beginning Ballroom Dance Lessons

This class is for the beginning ballroom dancer. Accused of having two left feet or never danced before? Come join us for an evening of instruction and fun on Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:00pm. Couples or singles are both welcome. Learn to “dance like the stars.” Light refreshments are served and the cost is $3.00 per person.

USA Dance
This national ballroom dancing association holds an evening dance the first Sunday of each month unless it is a City Holiday. Call Patsy Mitchell for more information at 386-740-0187.

Intermediate Watercolor for Seniors

This is an ongoing class that meets on Thursday afternoons from 2:00-4:00pm. The cost is $32.00 per month of instruction. Once you have graduated from the beginner class listed above, you can continue improving your skills with this group. Shirley Compeau, a DBCC certified watercolor, is the instructor and will provide you with supply lists. LIMITED REGISTRATIONS!

Special Techniques Watercolor Seminar
This six week session will cover bas-relief (floral/landscape), watercolor batik (floral/landscape), painting realistic metals (still life), and pastel with watercolor base (landscape). Students will be able to create at least one painting in each of the above techniques. Classes begin Thursday February 1st, 2007 and conclude March 8th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Batik will require a four hour class due to drying time needed. Fee is $60.00 and will include some specialized materials, but you will need your regular supplies also. Pre-registration required. 5th - October 26th. Fee: $50.00
