Thank you for your interest in our search for a new police chief!
The City of DeLand has partnered with STARS, a recruitment entity created by the Florida Police Chief’s Association, to conduct a national search for a police chief. Initially, we received more than 80 applications from across the U.S. for the position.
The Selection Committee has selected 12 semi-finalists. A questionnaire will be sent to those candidates and the Selection Committee will then narrow the list to 5-6 finalists that will come to DeLand for Committee interviews and citizen town hall question and answer sessions.
The selection committee includes City Manager Michael Pleus; Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, Ray Almadovar of Stetson Public Safety; Tisi Blakeslee of the Alumni Association; Norton Bonaparte, Sanford City Manager; Althea Chavers of the Spring Hill Boys & Girls Club; Eugene Collier, Concerned Clergy Chair; resident Paula Kelton; Pastor Mike Modica; former city commissioner Charles Paiva and Color Line Roundtable Chair Ted Small.
We will make announcements when the field has been narrowed and we will let the public know when we schedule town hall sessions to meet with the finalists.
Our desire is to have a new police chief in place by the end of April or beginning of May.
