City of DeLand Sustainability Action Plan
The purpose of this plan is to identify and seek internal and external resources that will enable the city to continue active pursuit of its vision and strategic plan.
Having a home that contributes to a healthy environment is important, but a home is only as green as the people who live in it. In and out of the home, there is a lot you can do to help protect the world’s air, water, land, wildlife and climate. Please check out the following links to learn more about living green.
The City is proud to have a certified Green Team comprised of employees within the city, the team is responsible for arranging the annual green event as well as sustaining and improving the City’s carbon footprint.
The City of DeLand currently sponsors and arranges for a green event downtown on a yearly basis.
Many of the city’s buildings have auto thermostats that regulate the temperature when the buildings are not in use. The city also uses fluorescent lighting in many of its buildings to conserve energy. We have also had progress energy come and do an Energy audit on all three fire stations to see if we could improve our energy efficiency.
The City of DeLand turns irrigation on manually at various locations to water only when necessary.
We currently have recycle bins in city buildings to recycle office paper, aluminum cans, catalogs, cardboard and plastic.
Playgrounds and Parks
We have installed artificial turf at our Candlelight Oaks and Chisholm Center playgrounds.
We are currently offering our customers the option of paperless email billing. We have also installed a new report writing software for the police station to reduce the use of paper.
In the future, we plan on reducing the amount of paper by using laserfiche to capture documents from our ERP system and email.
We currently are buying mercury-free, recyclable, LED flat panel displays for our computers instead of CCFL technology which consume an average of 43 percent less power at maximum brightness, resulting in extraordinary cost and carbon savings.
We currently have purchased hybrid vehicles, 4 cylinder vehicles, electric scooters and more fuel efficient vehicles to conserve our fuel intake. We are also adding fuel additives to vehicles to increase the mileage of our vehicles. As well as using bio-diesel fuel to decrease the amount of fuel consumed. The police department is proactively using bike patrol to reduce fuel consumption.
