The Citizen Police Academy is a ten-week police/community program designed to give the public a working knowledge of all aspects of the DeLand Police Department, how the law is applied, and what training the officers receive. Participants are placed in the environment of a simulated police academy where classes are taught by DeLand police officers. Each session consists of ten consecutive Thursday night classes conducted at the police building. The instruction is comprehensive and each week presents different topics covering the department and a variety crime or safety
issues. A graduation dinner follows the end of the session.
Graduates of the Citizen Police Academy are invited to join the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, Inc. The association is designed to be a continuation of the ten week Citizen Police Academy. The partnership forged during the Citizen Police academy between community members and the police continues as officers provide additional police related training, schedule guest speakers and provide a number of activities to further the involvement of the members with the DPD. Of special interest are the Partners In protection Program and the Neighborhood Traffic Watch Program. Alumni members receive training that permit them to assist officers during city events, patrol the city in a specially marked “citizen patrol” car, or use speed detection equipment to conduct speed surveys in neighborhoods where speeding complaints are
received. Attending community events, sponsoring fund raisers, and acting as ambassadors for the department, members promote a safer community by involvement with community service projects, and by assisting in the education of citizens living and working in DeLand about law enforcement and crime prevention.
Mission Statement: We are dedicated to work in partnership with our citizens to improve the quality of life for all.
