DeLand Mayor Robert F. Apgar joins pledge for 100 percent renewable energy
(DeLand, FL) – Mayor Robert F. Apgar today announced the DeLand City Commission’s support for a goal of powering DeLand entirely with clean and renewable energy by 2075. By authorization from the city commission, Mayor Apgar joins a growing coalition of Mayors for 100% Clean Energy who have similarly announced support for a goal of powering their communities with 100 percent renewable energy such as wind and solar.

“I am proud that our City supports a vision of 100 percent clean and renewable energy for DeLand,” said Mayor Apgar. “This transition will protect the health of our residents from pollution, create new jobs in the growing clean energy industry, and lower the burden of high energy costs placed on businesses and consumers.”
Mayors for 100% Clean Energy, an initiative of the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 Campaign, represents a growing number of mayors from across the country who have endorsed a community-wide goal of transitioning entirely to renewable energy. The full list of Mayors for 100% Clean Energy can be found here.

“We believe that a transition to carbon neutrality and clean energy is good for our community: It will make us stronger, healthier, and more resilient; it will create jobs and new business opportunities and it will allow us to become a more equitable society where everyone has opportunity in a thriving local economy,” reads the pledge signed by Mayor Apgar.
Apgar pointed out that the city has been named a Tree City USA for 29 years, some of the city’s departments have been working on implementing green initiatives and that being a more sustainable community is a key part in DeLand’s Strategic Plan.
“This pledge is the first step toward 100 percent clean and renewable energy,” Mayor Apgar added. “We look forward to working with city staff and community leaders across DeLand to take the next steps toward realizing this community goal.”
