(DeLand, FL) – It’s no secret in these parts, but Downtown DeLand and the MainStreet DeLand Association were officially crowned on Monday as the best Main Street in America.
“I want to thank the people who made us deserving of this title,” said MainStreet DeLand Association Executive Director Wayne Carter. “The businesses, the property owners and our residents make Downtown DeLand the best Main Street in America.”
MainStreet DeLand was one of 242 Main Streets in 48 states that competed for the title. More than 300,000 total votes were cast before judges selected a winner from the 10 nominees who received the most votes.
The contest, in its second year, is presented by Stihl Inc. and organized by Independent We Stand, a group that focuses on independently-owned businesses and educating people on the benefits of buying local.
“MainStreet DeLand has worked long and hard to reinvigorate the downtown. At one point over half of the downtown buildings were vacant. Now it is clearly the pride and joy of the community,” said Bill Brunelle, co-founder of Independent We Stand. “The purpose of the America’s Main Streets contest is to highlight the type of leadership and longstanding commitment to community that MainStreet DeLand provides.”
In addition to receiving a $25,000 cash prize, MainStreet DeLand will also receive a $1,000 certificate for STIHL outdoor power equipment, redeemable at any locally owned STIHL dealer in the U.S., a one-year subscription with SnapRetail – good for email marketing support, social media scheduling and a new website, a $500 shopping spree with Do-it Best Corp and $500 shopping spree with PPG Pittsburgh Paints. Additionally, MainStreet DeLand will work with Independent We Stand on a “Main Streets Make Us Better” event.
Most importantly, the recognition will put DeLand on the map, says DeLand Mayor Bob Apgar.
“So many people have worked over the years to build MainStreet DeLand into what it is today, and this award validates all of that effort,” Apgar said. “It’s an honor and I couldn’t be more proud to say that I live, work and play in the home of America’s Main Street.”
