Departmental Training Standards

All DFD members are certified as Florida State FF II's upon being hired and go through an extensive 12 month probationary training period. In this 12 month period training and testing is provided to reinforce basic skill and expose new FF/EMT's to the rigors and demands that this profession places on its members. In addition, each member of the DFD is a Florida State certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and must complete many hours of medical training in order to recertify every two years. Our Engineers must complete state certified Pump Operations, Hydraulics and Aerial Operations courses and pass the state test prior to being allowed to operate our apparatus. Finally, all Lieutenants must complete and be certified as Florida State Fire Officer I and Commanders and above must be certified Fire Officer II prior to 1/1/08 .

The DeLand Fire Department (DFD) prides itself on being a highly trained organization that is prepared to assist the public with all types of emergencies. In order to stay prepared all DFD members are required to obtain a minimum of 12 hours of training per month in addition to the different courses each individual takes on their own at the local Community College or through the Florida State Fire School . The following are some examples of the hands-on training DFD professionals undertake on a daily basis.
